The Early Music Podcast: Ludwig van Beethoven
Don’t you sometimes wish you could just ask Beethoven what he meant in that peculiar passage?
Everyone knows Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), the brilliant composer of the Moonlight Sonata... and it is easy to forget how revolutionary his music was for his time! After the Baroque period, the Classical period was marked in music by the arrival of the piano in the twenties, made possible by technical improvements, and which upset the allocation of roles in ensembles or the way music was played and written. But as innovative as they were, neither Beethoven nor the piano appeared by magic!
This episode welcomes Olga Pashchenko, a versatile performer that thrives on all sorts of keyboards: probably the best person to turn to, if you want to untangle the complex family tree of pianos!
