Festival Mars en Baroque

From 13 September 2024 to 13 October 2024/ France / Marseille

THE FESTIVAL
Editorial

Baroque music, marked by the invention of opera, witnessed another remarkable revolution: the emancipation of instrumental music, which acquired an immense repertoire and was an extraordinary field for experimenting with new forms (sonatas, concertos, etc.), new fields of sound (thanks to developments in instrumental construction) and constantly renewed combinations of instruments.  The Celestial Harmony that Renaissance vocal polyphony was intended to reflect gave way to a new Harmonia Instrumentalis, in which everyone, at their own level, from amateur violinists to virtuoso violinists, could find their place. After an edition focused on the voice, here was a festival paying tribute to instrumental music, in all its different guises. There will be harpsichord and cello recitals by two of today's great masters, French and German chamber music by magnificent young artists, and wild concertos in a thousand colours. Of course, there will be plenty of new music on offer too: the Trotteuse by Loïc Guénin and Alice Pierot, and Martin Mey and his minimum ensemble will take us down some mysterious and unusual paths. The voice, however, will not be entirely absent from this edition.<hr class=‘break-tag’ />First of all, because there's an anniversary to mark: the 650th anniversary of the death of the great Italian poet Petrarch. A programme of madrigals from the 16th and 17th centuries will be dedicated to him. Last but not least, the blending of voices and instruments is also at the heart of Baroque music, as in the French motets, which adopt the ‘Italian’ arrangement of one voice and two concertante instruments. One of the most brilliant exponents of this Italian style was our very own André Campra!
This year, autumn is Baroque season in Marseille!
