AWAKEN - A celebration of Spring at the National Centre for Early Music, 27 & 28 March
The NCEM is delighted to announce that extra celebrations for Early Music Day are planned with AWAKEN, an online festival of five spectacular concerts. The weekend begins with The Gesualdo Six, the award-winning British vocal consort, directed by Owain Park. In a specially commissioned film, the group take a whistle-stop musical tour of York taking in some of the city’s rich tapestry of venues including the medieval Merchant Adventurers’ Hall and Lady Chapel of York Minster. The day continues with Ensemble Augelletti, founded and directed by Olwen Foulkes, performing A Spring Lockdown, an intriguing tale of 18th century music making in a French debtors’ prison. Later the acclaimed counter-tenor Iestyn Davies is joined by viol consort Fretwork for a concert of CPE Bach and Vaughan Williams recorded earlier in the year at the NCEM. On Sunday, Consone Quartet are joined by cellist Alex Rolston as they present Schubert’s famous Quintet and the weekend ends with the fabulous I Fagiolini and the English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble broadcast from the majestic splendour of York Minster.
